Summary: What the IEP is:

Building a Strong Foundation: The Nuts and Bolts of Working with Students with Special Needs

1) A written individualized statement.

2) Developed by a team including the parents - parents are an integral part of the team. They should help develop the IEP by giving their input of their student's strengths, needs, etc., as well as their short or long-term goals.

3) To guarantee delivery of appropriate services,

4) For all students who are eligible for special education services.

Summary: Parent/Guardian Contacts:

Every effort should be made to contact parent/guardian prior to an IEP. Parents are an integral part of the team; they should help develop the IEP by giving their input of their student's strengths, needs, etc., as well as their short or long-term goals.

Summary IEP Form, "Present Level of Performance":

When preparing present levels for an IEP, the information written should describe assessment information, observed behaviors and typical performance in the various areas:

Summary IEP Form, "Areas of Need":

From the present levels of performance, you will be able to see what the students' areas of need are.

Summary IEP Form, "Annual Goal":

From the areas of need, you will write goals to address these needs. Goals are statements about skills we are planning to work on. Objectives/Benchmarks are the steps to achieve this goal.

Goals should:

  • Be clear and understandable,
  • Be reasonable enough to accomplish in one year,
  • Be derived from the assessment,
  • Be ones you feel are the most important,
  • Be measurable,
  • Should state a specific skill being taught
  • Match student's skill level and ability
  • Be reported to parents, as agreed in the IEP

Writing a Goal:

  • Goals should state WHEN? WHAT? HOW?
    • WHEN? (Timeline)- When goal will be met EX: By May 00, the student will…
    • WHAT? (Skill area and amount of growth expected)- The general area to be targeted and amount of growth or acquisition of skills to be obtained EX: increase positive interactions with peers in structured situations
    • HOW? (Criterion and evaluation tool)-Indicate accuracy or degree of success for mastery of goal and evaluation tool used EX: with 80% accuracy on weekly spelling tests

Summary: Transition Plan:

A transition plan must be completed at the IEP for any students over 14 years old.

Summary: Assessment:

Review current IEP objectives, report cards, data collection, portfolio (if available), parent interview, teacher made assessment/diagnostic tests and standardized tests. A variety of assessment tools are available, choose one that best measures the needs of each student. You may not always use the same test for every student.

Summary: Data Collection:

The purpose of data collection is to keep an ongoing record of students' progress. The form must include the benchmark that the student is working towards. Make collection forms simple and meaningful. Write objectives that are measurable. We have included sample data collection forms in the binder however; forms may be developed as needed. Forms must include: benchmark, dates of data collection, and measurable results (percentage, frequency, number of trials, etc). Consistency in procedures and criteria is essential for valid results; therefore, all personnel must follow the established criteria.

Portfolios:

The portfolio is an ongoing collection of evidence that reflect students' progress towards IEP goals. Suggested items in portfolio: IEP goals, personal data, class schedule, work samples (individual or group work), photographs, audio tapes, computer printouts, video tapes, behavior plan, and report cards. Evidence for each objective should be included in the portfolio.

Suggested tips for collecting data:

1) Collect data on a regular basis

2) Review collected data continually

3) Keep data collection sheets available at all times

Summary Support Personnel:

When gathering student information prior to the IEP, be sure to include input from all staff who have contact with the student: (Speech Therapist, Adapted PE/Vision/Hearing Specialists, instructional assistants, bus drivers, integrated teachers, etc.)
