The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline: it is the lack of procedures and routines. Make the work interesting and the discipline will take care of itself. Harry Wong
Organization begins with the teacher. Invest the time needed to organize yourself, then set up a routine for the classroom
Guidelines for Implementing Routines1) Begin on the first day2) Be specific about routines3) Have children practice4) Praise and compliment5) Re-teach when deviations occur6) Give reasons for each routine7) Prioritize teaching of routines8) Be flexible (add/delete)
Transitions occur many times throughout the day. Transition activities are a way to get students to do what we want them to do without a lot of fuss. Be sensitive to student needs during these transition times. Before a transition occurs, explain to the students what is expected (next activity, location, outcome, etc.).

"If you expect kids to behave you must first be sure of just what your expectations really are."
Your expectations must be:1) Clear and specific (reasonable)2) Taught (modeled and practiced)
3) Consistent (by all staff).
Students need to know when they are living up to your expectations. Reinforcement for appropriate behavior needs to be part of your routine, schedule them often, and according to the students needs. (Younger students may need more reinforcers than older students; newly targeted behaviors will need to be reinforced more frequently). Don't get stuck on rewarding with food. Reinforcers may be: stickers, treasure chest, stamps, additional free time, smiles, high five etc. Be creative and aware of what will motivate each student. Plan on fading rewards from tangible to intangible as soon as possible. The goal is for students to complete a task and the completion of the task is the reinforcer.
A general definition of discipline is: teaching self-control, and appropriate behavior. Discipline is teaching or reshaping behavior, not punishing.
Your discipline should:1) Provide immediate consequences for certain types of undesirable behavior2) Show students they DO have behavioral choices (alternatives)3) Show students they have control over what happens to them4) Leave student dignity intact5) Not create problems for others
Staff ExpectationsOnce the behavior program is set up and successfully running, the aides can assist in carrying out the plan. Be sure to train them and make sure they understand the goals of the student and support needed.
Parent/Guardian Contacts:Every effort should be made to keep parents informed of their student's behavior on a regular basis (positive and negative). Parents are an integral part of the team their support is instrumental to student success.
Behavior Support Plan (Federal Mandated Plan)
This plan is developed to address student behavior that impedes learning or the learning of peers. A behavior support plan is developed by the school psychologist to assist the classroom teacher in addressing the targeted behavior.
Behavior Intervention Plan (Hughes Bill)
This is a plan for students who exhibit severe/violent behavior problems. The student is considered a danger to himself, others, or property. This plan is written by the school psychologist after extensive observation and documentation.
Staff: Plans must be followed out as written. All staff must understand each step of the plan and follow it as directed.
